π΅ Payment Methods
Both cash and card payments are commonly used at art markets, so we recommend offering whichever payment methods work best for your setup. Attendees typically prefer to avoid card surcharge so there will be attendees who prefer cash payments.
π Insurance
Public liability insurance helps protect you if someone is injured or their property is damaged as a result of your activities at the market. For example, this could apply if a customer trips over something at your table, is injured by part of your display, or their belongings are accidentally damaged while interacting with your setup.
All KRAYON artists are required to have public liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $10 million. To acquire Public Liability Insurance, you will need to get it from an Australian Insurance Provider. A 'Certificate of Currency' will be provided as proof of your public liability coverage which is the document that KRAYON will need from artists.
** For short-term $10 million coverage, policies should typically be no more than $100 AUD
Insurance Providers
βοΈ Tax / GST / ABN
Tax obligations and requirements depend on your individual circumstances, so we've included some general information below to help you understand what may apply.
Do I need to register for GST (Goods and Services Tax)?
No, not necessarily. The general GST registration threshold is $75,000 AUD. Meaning that you don't need to register for GST if your turnover is below $75,000 AUD. If you're not registered for GST, you should not add GST to your prices.
Do I need an ABN?
No, not necessarily. For KRAYON, we don't require artists to have an ABN. Whether this applies to you depends on your individual circumstances.
πͺ§ Signage & Branding
Your table doesn't need to look like a professional retail store. A few simple signs can make your table easier to browse, help customers understand your products and make it clear who you are.
What signage should I have?
At a minimum, we recommend having:
- Your artist name / branding
- Clear prices
- Social media / website
- Payment information
Consider branding visibility
Before the market and while you plan your table setup, consider some of these questions:
- Can I immediately tell who this table belongs to?
- Can I see the prices without picking things up?
- Can I tell what the products are?
- Is the artist name visible from the aisle?
Customers will be viewing your table while walking past, so clear and readable signage is always helpful!
π¦ Table Setup
Your table is your little space within KRAYON, so think about how you want visitors to experience it. You don't need an elaborate or expensive setup, a few thoughtful choices can make a big difference.
Products
Before buying display stands or decorations, lay out everything you plan to bring and think about:
- Which products do you want customers to notice first?
- Which products can be grouped together?
- How much space does each product need?
- Potential bestseller/main products?
Test Setup
Before the market, we recommend doing a test setup to see how you feel about how products are arranged. Once you're happy with how your setup looks, take a photo! This will help as a reference during bump-in as it'll save you time from having to remember where everything is placed.
Behind The Scenes
You'll be spending several hours behind your table, so think about what you need during the day and how you can organise your products so that they're within reach!
Some things to keep nearby:
- Phone
- Card reader
- Cash box / wallet
- Packaging
- Shopping bags
- Business cards
- Bestseller stock
- Water
- Snacks
- Personal belongings
ποΈ Taking Breaks
During the market, you don't have to stand at your table every second of the day. Some options to ensure you have enough breaks and rest:
- Ask your table neighbour/partner to watch your table while you visit the bathroom, grab a quick snack, or browse around
- Using signage such as "Artist on break. Back in 10 min" is also perfectly acceptable if you don't feel comfortable having someone watch your table
- Let the KRAYON Team know you need a break and we can arrange for staff/volunteer to watch your table
π A Little Reminder
Your first market doesn't have to be perfect.
You might forget something. Your display might change halfway through the day. You might sell more of one thing than you expected and less of another. You might feel nervous talking to customers etc. And that's completely okay!
Every artist develops their own way of doing markets over time. Your first KRAYON is simply your chance to try, learn and enjoy being part of the creative community.
Weβre so excited to have you here! π
